GEOLAG

is an initiative that aims to make the Geology of the Cantabrian Range known to all audiences in an accessible way, without losing scientific rigor. In this way, you will learn the History of our Earth and how the landscapes that surround us were formed.

GEOLAG will answer your questions and those of your children such as… How are volcanoes formed? Why do earthquakes occur? Do continents move? Why are there fossils in the mountains? How did life arise on Earth?

To answer these and other questions, GEOLAG relies on its own graphic material and simple language, attempting to translate the scientific language that sometimes proves difficult to understand for audiences unfamiliar with geology.

GEOLAG has designed different activities and services for all ages so that you can learn more about the planet where we live. Our excursions, workshops, talks, camps, training courses, and educational materials are designed to make it very easy for you.

Geotourism

in Asturias

Discover the landscape with a different perspective: science, territory, and emotion in every route.
Asturias is a privileged territory for geotourism. Its cliffs, mountains, caves, gorges, estuaries, waterfalls, and deposits allow us to read the history of the Earth in the landscape itself. At GEOLAG, we understand geotourism as a way of traveling, learning, and enjoying that combines nature, culture, and geological outreach in a manner accessible to all audiences.
What is geotourism

Geotourism is a way of understanding a territory through its geology, its landscapes, and the natural processes that have shaped them. It is not just about observing rocks or landforms, but about interpreting the environment to understand why a place is as it is, how it has evolved over time, and what relationship it maintains with biodiversity, human history, and local identity.

Geological heritage and conservation

Geotourism is also a conservation tool. When a landscape is understood, it is valued more. That is why we work with the idea that disseminating geodiversity is a way of protecting it. Rocks, fossils, minerals, caves, landforms, and geological processes are part of a natural and cultural heritage that deserves to be known, respected, and transmitted.

Types of geotourism in Asturias

Geotourism in Asturias can be experienced from multiple perspectives: paleontological, archaeological, mining, speleological, or urban. Each of them allows us to discover how geology relates to culture, history, landscape, and daily life, always from a rigorous and respectful interpretation of the environment.

The geological attractions of Asturias allow for the development of very diverse experiences: from interest in fossils and minerals to visits to caves, karst landscapes, sites with archaeological significance, mining-industrial heritage, or urban tours focused on the rocks and fossils present in buildings and pavements. This variety makes geotourism a rich, cross-cutting, and adaptable proposal for different audiences, from families and educational centers to hikers, cultural travelers, or people with scientific interests.

GEOtourism, nature, culture, and scientific outreach

The history of the Earth is written in the Asturian landscape. At GEOLAG, we help you read it. We transform the territory into a comprehensible, exciting, and well-told experience so that each route is much more than a visit: it is a way of seeing Asturias with different eyes.

Why Asturias is an exceptional destination

Few places combine such visible and spectacular geology in such a diverse space. Asturias offers rugged coastline, karst systems, large gorges, traces of the glacial past, caves, fossil deposits, mining heritage, and landscapes shaped over millions of years. This richness makes the region an extraordinary setting for experiencing geotourism with depth, beauty, and meaning.

A landscape that is interpreted
At GEOLAG, we are committed to rigorous yet clear, visual, and attractive outreach. We want each person to understand the value of the place they visit without needing prior knowledge. Interpreting the landscape means translating geological complexity into an enriching experience, capable of awakening curiosity, environmental awareness, and connection with the territory.
Some major geotourism attractions of Asturias

Asturias brings together numerous sites of great interest, from the blowholes and tidal sinkholes of the eastern coast to the estuaries of Barayo, Villaviciosa, and the Eo; from waterfalls and natural lakes to caves, chasms, gorges, and reference karst landscapes in the Cantabrian Range. Added to this are paleontological deposits, points of archaeological interest, and significant mining and industrial heritage.

Experiences and lines of work of GEOLAG
At GEOLAG, we develop guided geological routes, outreach activities, publications, talks, courses, and educational workshops. Our goal is to bring geology closer to individuals, educational centers, organizations, and visitors who wish to discover Asturias from a different perspective: deeper, more conscious, and much more memorable.
Asturias and the Geosites Network

Asturias has sites and geological contexts of international relevance integrated into the Geosites Network, a fundamental reference for identifying locations where the history of the Earth is exceptionally preserved. The presence of these contexts confirms the enormous scientific, educational, and landscape value of the Asturian territory, and reinforces its potential as a quality geotourism destination.

Beyond their specialized interest, Geosites help explain to the general public why certain landscapes, outcrops, caves, geological structures, or deposits are unique on a national and international scale. Incorporating this idea into the new website allows us to convey that Asturias is not only a beautiful territory, but a space with recognized geological heritage worthy of being interpreted, protected, and shared.

Las Catedrales: Cliffs in Transformation

As Catedrais Beach, in Ribadeo, is much more than one of Galicia’s most visited landscapes. Its slate and schist cliffs, shaped by waves and tides, provide a live demonstration of how geology transforms the coastline. Arches, columns, fractures, and landslides turn this protected enclave into a window into our planet’s past and a natural laboratory for understanding coastal processes.
